Hey Henna Friends!

Henna in the winter?! Yes, please! during the winter doldrums is the perfect time to use henna to uplift your mood.

Cold weather can pose challenges for achieving vibrant henna stains, but with a few adjustments, you can ensure your designs pop even in the winter and early spring chill.

Challenges of Cold Weather

  • Dry Skin: Winter air can dry out your skin, which is great for henna! However, we tend to apply extra lotion to combat this.

  • Low Temperatures: Henna stains set better in warm, moist environments.

Winter-Proof Henna Tips

  1. Use Sticky Henna: When mixing your henna, add a bit more sugar to the mix than you normally do. Sugar keeps the henna moist longer and helps it stick to the skin better. The dryness of winter air make henna crack and fall off early, so extra sugar in your mix will help offset this.
  2. Start with Clean Lotion-free Skin: Henna loves dry clean skin. We tend to try to combat dry skin in the winter with lotions, but avoid lotion on the day you are doing henna.

  3. Keep Warm: Use a heating pad or blanket while the henna sets to maintain warmth. Drink hot tea! Bundle up! Whatever it takes, do your best to stay warm.

  4. Seal It In: After applying henna, use a sugar sealer to keep it moist for longer. Learn how to make and use a sugar sealer on our DIY henna page.

  5. Hydrate Your Skin: After removing the paste, apply coconut oil or a similar natural moisturizer to preserve the stain. Dry skin exfoliates faster than moisturized skin. Before we apply the henna we want dry skin. After we have a henna stain we want to keep our skin moisturized.

  6. Plan Ahead: Ensure you’re in a well-heated space and have a plan to protect your henna.

Winter weather doesn’t have to dull your henna stains. With a little care, you can get the same rich vibrant stain you see in summer!

Stay Warm!
Jody
