Jody's Henna Journey

In 1999, Asad's mom and sister introduced me to henna, igniting my passion for the art during an exploration of his Pakistani heritage. My henna journey began in a time where accurate henna information was scarce, buried under myths and unsafe practices relayed by well-meaning Aunties.

My favorite tip involved adding Pakistani camel urine for dark henna stains – yes, camel pee! Thankfully, eventually, the internet allowed me to connected with folks who approached henna with scientific and academic rigor, providing clarity on achieving safe and dark henna stains.

  • Though I fell in love with henna immediately, at first, I doubted whether henna was the right fit for me. I questioned my artistic abilities. Despite the warm and excited welcome from the community, I thought maybe it’s only for Indian and Pakistani people.

As my henna journey continued, I met fellow artists from all over the world and every background you can imagine! That made me appreciate the art and its diversity even more. Connecting with these henna artists from all over the world and exploring the expansive cultural history of henna, spanning Southeast Asia, Egypt, Crete, Persia, and even Italy and Spain, broadened my perspective.

The more I immersed myself in the beautiful fusion of art, science, and history within henna, the more comfortable I became with the practice, and the more henna became part of me. I finally found my place! I want to help you find yours place in henna.

Always Missed

We lost Denna, a very special member of the Beachcombers Team, after her battle with cancer in 2023. She will always be a part of the Beachcombers family, and we can thank Denna for bringing glitter to us. As Denna loved to say, "glitter makes everything better!"

Glitter on, my friend!
