Summer Henna Vibes: Where to Wear Henna When the Sun's Out

Octopus henna on the knee

One of the best things about summer? Skin! When the weather warms up and the layers come off, it’s the perfect time to play with henna in fun new ways. Whether you're headed to the beach, dancing at a music festival, or just soaking up the sun in your backyard, henna is a beautiful (and temporary!) way to express yourself.

This season, why not think beyond the hands? Here are some of my favorite places to wear henna when the sun is shining...

🌸 Ankles & Feet
Sandals were made for henna! Designs on the tops of feet, along the ankle bone, or even wrapping around the heel feel delicate and summery. Add some toe accents and off  you go!

✨ Try This: A vine wrapping from the inside ankle around the back of the heel with a flower tucked at the outer ankle. Elegant and flattering, though a little challenging to execute.

🌞 Shoulders & Collarbones
Sleeveless season means open shoulders and collarbones—hello, canvas! Henna here can be flirty and feminine or bold and statement-making. Think mandalas radiating from the shoulder, or a chain of floral swirls draping along the collarbone.

💡 Note: The chest are generally doesn't stain well, so follow those aftercare instructions! These areas don't get as dark, but sometimes last longer, particularly the upper arm.

💫 Lower Backs & Hips
Heading to a pool party or music fest? Henna on the lower back or hip adds a secret little touch of boho magic. These placements are more private, but they feel extra special—like wearing fancy lingerie only you know about. Again, these are areas that don't stain as dark as the hands and feet, but are still fun to wear!

🔥 For a fun twist, use our UV glitter on these designs while the paste is on the skin—it glows under blacklight and still looks amazing in natural light!

🧜♀️ Midriffs & Ribs
Crop tops and bikinis open up some of the most interesting henna placements. A design sweeping up the side of the ribs or wrapping around the navel feels playful and dynamic. These placements are great for parties, vacations, or even maternity henna moments.

🖌️ Not Just Where… But How
Summer henna doesn’t have to be complex! Think lightweight, flowy, and easy to wear:

  • Sea creatures! Sea turtles, octopuses, and jellyfish are always hits!
  • Florals and vines feel airy and organic
  • Geometric or Moroccan patterns look bold and clean against sun-kissed skin
  • Bold linework holds up better to sweat and sunscreen

And don’t forget your aftercare! Summer heat, swimming, and sunscreen can affect henna stains—so avoid anything exfoliating. Be sure ALL sunscreen is removed from the area to be hennaed, since it will block the henna stain.
