Jagua Safety

After all the black henna warnings, you might confuse jagua with these unsafe products. Jagua is a South American fruit (genipa americana) that can stain the skin a dark blue color. Jagua is normally done in henna style designs and is often done by henna artists, but it is not henna.

Is Jagua Safe?

Assuming you are getting actual jagua, yes! Since it is a fruit, jagua has a much higher allergy risk than henna, but as long as you are not allergic to it, it's a safe option. If you are allergic to any citrus fruits, strawberries, or tropical fruits you should avoid jagua.

Possible Reactions

  • Allergic Reaction: We can't always predict that we'll be allergic to something new, and allergies can develop at any time. Be cautious when first using jagua, and be sure you are getting safe product.
  • Reactions from Excessive Heat: Much like lime juice can cause reactions in the sun and heat, jagua can cause reactions from excessive heat (even a hot shower). Avoid hot sun, hot showers, hot tubs, or any other excessive heat for at least 24 hours after you have removed your jagua.

How Do I Know Jagua is Safe?

  • Look for someone that really knows their product well.
  • Aftercare instructions should include avoiding heat.
  • It should take a day to develop to full color. It will NEVER be full color right away.

Jagua Aftercare

  • Keep the gel or paste on for 2 hours.
  • Wash off with cool water and soap.
  • The color will start off a light blue or gray and develop into a deep blue/black over one day.
  • Avoid heat for at least 24 hours after jagua removal.
  • Protect the design with a sock or a wrap while you sleep for the first 3 days. Jagua tends to transfer.

Hennua or Jagua-Henna

You can mix henna and jagua together to produce deep walnut brown (nearly black) stains.

Do You Sell Jagua?

Not yet! Due to the higher allergen and reaction rate of jagua, we are not currently selling jagua. We do continue to stay abreast of new developments in production and continually revisit the option of offering jagua. We have no plans to offer it in the near future.
