Troubleshooting: Henna is cracking and falling off.

If the henna paste flakes off too quickly, you will not get a good long lasting stain. Some cracking and falling off is normal and expected, especially on your bendy bits, but excessive cracking is a problem. There are a few easy ways to combat this problem.

  1. Add Sugar to Your Henna Mix:
    • Sugar enhances henna's adherence to the skin, prolongs its wetness, and increases flexibility, resulting in a darker stain. Think of sugar as adding glue to your henna! Experiment with sugar amounts based on henna brand/crop and your climate. The more humid your climate, the less sugar you need.

Remember, sugar liquefies when mixed and won't thicken the paste. Adding sugar will make your paste substantially thinner. Adjust liquid levels to compensate.

  2. Use a Sealer:
    • Apply a sealer when the henna is partially dry to prevent premature cracking and falling off. Refer to our How-To page for information on how to make and use sealers.

  3. Steam Your Henna:
    • Proceed with caution, but steaming your henna can yield excellent results by both maintaining moisture and adding warmth. Ensure the henna remains moist but not excessively wet during steaming.

Note: If your henna isn't drying properly, there is too much sugar in your mix. Experiment by preparing batches without sugar and gradually adding sugar to each new batch until you achieve the consistency that works for you.
