How to Mix Henna for Hair
If you desire red tones, use henna alone. If you want darker reds, browns, or black, henna must be combined with indigo. The lighter your hair, the more vibrant the red color.
Color Variations:
- White blond or gray hair results in a bold coppery red.
- Light brown hair yields an auburn shade varying in darkness and brownness
- Dark brown or black hair gets glossy red highlights in the sun.
Before going all-in with henna, do a strand test to ensure you like the results. Mix a bit of powder with water and apply it to a small hair sample.
Mixing Steps:
- Mix henna powder with lukewarm water until it's like thick pancake batter, but not too runny.
- Set aside for 2-4 hours for dye release (3-6 hours for Jamila henna).
Application Steps:
- Using gloves, apply henna to clean, dry hair or freshly washed hair (WITHOUT conditioner). Ensure every strand is saturated and apply generously.
- Place a plastic hair cap over the hair, pressing it down to touch the henna.
- Remove any product on the skin promptly, as it may stain.
- Leave henna to soak into the hair for 2-4 hours. The longer, the richer the color.
- Rinse the paste out of your hair without using shampoo, but do use conditioner.
- Optional: Blow dry hair for 10-15 minutes to help set the color.
Important Note:
- The color will oxidize over the next 1-3 days to reach its final vibrant shade.
Henna Tips:
- For hard-to-cover grays or a richer color, substitute lemon juice for about half of the water.
- If you added lemon juice, leave henna out an extra hour for dye release and follow up with a good conditioner.
- If you have thick hair, add a bit of sugar to make the paste easier to work with.
- Neutralize henna's scent by adding a teaspoon of ginger powder.
- Essential oils can be added for a different scent, but use sparingly. They are powerful and will not change the color.
- Freeze extra henna paste for later use or turn it into a henna gloss.
- Warm water speeds up dye release for quicker henna results.
Enjoy your henna experience and experiment to find what works best for your hair!
